Remington Model 5

The Uncontested Classic from Typewriter History

Made in the USA by Remington between the year of 1940 and 1947. (A few alternately branded versions were manufactured in other countries).

There are variants throughout the production run, all of which are beautiful and functional.

Remington was one of the premier typewriter builders of the day.

I choose this shape and model for a few reasons:

Models before this iteration required the plywood case bottom as the base, which often deteriorates. After this style, the quality declines somewhat, and the style falls off of a cliff.

These are my favorite typewriter from history, visually speaking.

They are available in US QWERTY keyboards, and they hold up extraordinarily well to time.

We replace the rollers and rubber feet as needed, and condition or resurface the platens.

The serif typeface, which varies in size but is usually on the smaller, 12 character per inch size (12 point), has a beautiful vintage feel and even delivery.

We have an experienced service team that works on these for us, to ensure that they are in tip-top shape.

Please let us know if you have additional questions.

FAQ

When will I get my machine?

We ship your writing machine in 2-3 weeks, via UPS ground. (To the US. International shipping requires a few days more, USPS International services).

What takes that long?

We sell machines by model, so it takes take a machine out of inventory that matches your specs, and inspect, clean, and service it. We replace parts as needed, Including screws, main springs, drawbands, and rubber parts.

Can I just find a used machine somewhere instead?

Of course! We encourage you to explore the world. However, it won't quite work right. this is the nature of a machine sitting for decades.

If you need to get to writing, and spare yourself many nights of research and tinkering, we have the solution.

What about 'refurbished' machines on other vintage sites?

Usually, they are just cleaned up slightly and shipped out. They don't usually work 100% (more like 80%). This is because most people have never used a writing machine, so they don't know how it is supposed to work! They see an opportunity to buy a vintage machine and 'flip it', however... you get what you pay for, as the old adage goes!

Why do you charge X?

Excellent question!

Priceless heirloom, endless inspiration, the stuff of dreams.

You’ll pass it to your children or into the annals of history.

Ask yourself what this will bring you, and what you could create with it, and you’ll have answered your question.

We used to focus on ‘working’ machines. And they worked, but we didn’t have time to devote to exceptional machines. IN charging a little more, we can spend more time and give more tender care to each machine, making sure your writing experience is as exceptional as it can be.

Also these machines get rarer and rarer every year. People cut the keys off to make jewelry, or they destroy while trying to dismantle or service it. Some just sit and rust.

So seize your lifetime family heirloom while you can. Your children will be glad you did.
