Here is the description of a recently sold model:
This is a beautiful specimen of one of history's quintessential writing machines. This model was used by Hemingway and others of his ilk and era.
This machine has certainly been used, but cared for and loved as well. the insides are quite clean. The platen is hard but in good condition, and still grips the paper well. The rollers are excellent.
The feet have been replaced as needed. A new ribbon has been installed.
The Noiseless has a unique mechanism, which catches the type bar before it smacks the platen. This, coupled with rubber bumpers at the top and bottom of the stroke, reduce the sound.
This paint has some specs and droplet marks, and a few areas that seem to have been touched up decades ago. So it is not pristine, but still quite an eye catcher. There is some touch up around the front, and minor touch-up on the paper support, and the ribbon covers. More polishing over time may remove some of the spots, though I'm all polished out for the moment.
This model hails from the 40’s, after the mechanical pieces had been refined.
The carriage knobs and hardware are in excellent condition.
This machine has been cleaned and serviced for your writing pleasure!
The case is in above average, though not perfect, condition. The latches and hinges are worn but work. Handle is solid. All material covering the plywood intact, with some wear to the edges. It does the job. Very little of the ubiquitous mildew smell from the era.
The print is clear and crisp; adjusted and well-balanced between upper and lower case and between letters.
Sometimes these machines print a little faintly, due to the Noiseless mechanism. The trick is to use 2 sheets of paper, or thicker paper, or a cotton ribbon.
All of the features work as designed, including:
Tabulator (with one key tab included... these are often lost).
2-tone Ribbon Selector
Single, Double, Triple Line spacing with indicator
Carriage Lock
Please let me know if you have additional questions.
I'll include a digital copy of the manual as well.
This machine comes with my Classic Typewriter guarantee and lifetime trade-in policy.

It won’t be exactly as the machines pictured (all of which we recently sold) but it will be a beautiful working typewriter in comparable (or better) condition, serviced, adjusted, and ready to write!
Perfectly working typewriter. Types like a dream.
These machines have a very fast, loose action. I find them the quickest of vintage machines. And they are the earliest machine with a segment (or basket) shift, which adds to the speed.
While I’ve had countless typewriters pass through my hands, my go-to model is one of these. The vintage stylings with the practicality, durability, and reliability are all I ever need.
Allow 2-3 weeks for delivery.
Comes packed safely in eco-friendly materials, with a fresh ribbon, case, digital manual; adjusted and oiled for your writing pleasure.

Original hard shell case in usable condition. These are often quite worn at the hinges (which were designed to separate so the top of the case can come off).
The ‘Silent’ and the ‘Sterling’ are nearly identical, other than the decal on the paper support. As for ‘sound’, I think the Silent was once more insulated (with felt), and now that makes little difference. I generally sell them as one model, and will send you the best example I have.

THE CLASSIC TYPEWRITER PROCESS
Working Guarantee
(Or: How dare we guarantee a 50 or 60 year old machine?)
Each machine is carefully screened for quality and reliability.
Each machine passes a rigorous 14 point mechanical inspection.
Each machine is cleaned, serviced, and adjusted so that it functions as it was designed to.
Each machine is THOROUGHLY tested by a writer. (Usually people who say a typewriter ‘works’ haven’t tested most of its most important features. Sometimes the type bars move but are misaligned; sometimes the carriage won’t advance; sometimes lesser-used keys stick; sometimes whole pieces are missing, etc). If it is found to need work, we have technicians with 40 years of experience.
If it is found to be acceptable…
Each machine is described in vivid detail and carefully photographed from every angle in high resolution so you know exactly what you’re getting.
Each machine is cleaned and carefully packaged for safe shipment (believe it or not, improper shipping is the MOST COMMON CAUSE OF DAMAGE for a vintage typewriter).
The Classic Typewriter LIFETIME Trade-In Policy
If at any reason you decide that you are done with the machine you got from us, you can trade it in for the full value, minus shipping and, if there is any, wear and tear. You pay the difference and we will send your next dream machine.

A new ribbon, on vintage spools.
(We opt for high-end silk or cotton ribbons, for a more vintage feel, on vintage metal ribbon spools).

FAQ
When will I get my machine?
We ship your writing machine in 2-3 weeks, via UPS ground. (To the US. International shipping requires a few days more, USPS International services).
What takes that long?
We sell machines by model, so it takes take a machine out of inventory that matches your specs, and inspect, clean, and service it.
Can I just find a used machine somewhere instead?
Of course! We encourage you to explore the world. However, it won't quite work right. this is the nature of a machine sitting for decades.
If you need to get to writing, and spare yourself many nights of research and tinkering, we have the solution.
What about 'refurbished' machines on other vintage sites?
Usually, they are just cleaned up slightly and shipped out. They don't usually work 100% (more like 80%). This is because most people have never used a writing machine, so they don't know how it is supposed to work! They see an opportunity to buy a vintage machine and 'flip it', however... you get what you pay for, as the old adage goes!
Why do you charge X?
Excellent question!
Priceless heirloom, endless inspiration, the stuff of dreams.
You’ll pass it to your children or into the annals of history.
Ask yourself what this will bring you, and what you could create with it, and you’ll have answered your question.
As soon as the clack of writing machines became widespread, the noise became a problem. Manufacturers were always searching for ways to dampen the sound. If you imagine how loud one machine is, imagine now how loud a room full of secretaries or accountants could be!
So the geniuses of engineering went to work, and created and refined the noiseless mechanisms over decades and iterations.
This Remington model 7 is the best, in my opinion (It’s THE BEST).
There is also a desktop noiseless, which is nice however most people shy away from 50 or 70 pound machines these days: they are overkill and cumbersome. Even the Model 8 leapt to become way bigger and blocker.
The earlier models, prior to the 7, have design flaws or just aren't practical. So we've settled on the 7!
These machine has a unique aesthetic, and is instantly recognizeable.
It is where angular meets elegantly rounded, modernist, elegant.
They were made in an era that toed the line between mass manufacture and hand made, so they are superior quality, particularly the earlier ones. Every detail, from the mechanics to the outer shell, to the lacquer and decals, is of the highest quality.
The paper support is the branded piece that folds down, to reveal the margin sets. So there are no little chrome fingers to break off or bend.
(I have a soft spot for these, I confess). Regale me with questions, I love that.
Variations:
Earliest models:
Small, attractive upright carriage return lever. (I like these but they grew out of fashion, like most things I like).
The early models have chrome ringed, glass keys (rare).
No tab keys.
Later models:
The branding is sometimes Underwood and sometimes Remington. Sometimes Remington Rand.
The model was licensed to each brand, but they are essentially the same.
Most have round bakelite keys with white lettering.
Gloss black in the earlier versions, matte crinkle paint in the later.
The ribbon spool covers, ornate, start as chrome-handled metal, and eventually become plastic.
Category: Portable
Years: 1932 to 1948
Features:
Large-diameter Platen is sturdy and robust.
Right and Left Margin
1,2,3 line spacing, with indicators (some models only have 2 line space settings).
Two tone ribbon selector.
Tabs, set with keys in the rear.
Large feet provide a stable, quiet base (we often replace these with new ones).
Large rear rollers hold up well.
Keys are round and ergonomic.
Rather heavy carriage return.
Quiet end of line bell ('Noiseless')
Sound dampening features make for a machine that actually is QUIET (It's more of a thump than a clack).
Manufactured in the United States.
Carriage lock for safe transport.
Robust ribbon reversal that rarely fails.
Robust draw string which rarely breaks.
Plywood case with latches and lock (usually missing key), which holds up to time well. Handle often eroded, but usually works as it is lined with a metal interior.
Clear, even, attractive serif typeface, though it takes some practice and technique to achieve it!
