The Underwood Champion is a classic typewriter that embodies the innovation and elegance of early 20th-century portable writing machines. Produced by the Underwood Typewriter Company, the Champion debuted during the 1930s, a period when typewriters were becoming essential tools for writers, journalists, and business professionals. Underwood, already a respected name in the industry, sought to combine functionality, portability, and style in this model to appeal to a broad audience. The Champion was a triumph of engineering and design, showcasing Underwood's commitment to quality and usability.

One of the most striking features of the Underwood Champion was its sleek and compact design. Unlike the heavier office typewriters of the time, the Champion was lightweight and portable, making it ideal for on-the-go use. It came with a hard carrying case, further emphasizing its portability. The typewriter also featured a full keyboard with a smooth, responsive action, providing a satisfying typing experience. Its ribbon system and easy-to-access mechanics were designed for efficiency, allowing users to maintain and repair the machine with relative ease.

The Champion's durability and aesthetic appeal made it a favorite among writers and students alike. Its Art Deco-inspired design, with clean lines and often bold color schemes, reflected the era's taste for modernity. Over time, the Champion became synonymous with reliability and practicality, often seen in homes, schools, and offices. The typewriter remained in production for several decades, adapting to changing tastes and technological advancements while retaining its core features.

Today, the Underwood Champion is a beloved collector's item and a symbol of the golden age of typewriting. It represents not only a technological milestone but also a cultural artifact that connects us to a time when the written word was crafted with mechanical precision. Its enduring appeal lies in its ability to evoke nostalgia while remaining a functional tool for those who appreciate the tactile experience of manual typing.

***

This machine has snappy action. (some of the photos a special keyboard: it is QWERTY with US keys and also includes French and Spanish accent keys) but you’ll get the standard US QWERTY keyboard.

The decals are all immaculate, the paint is nearly perfect: a lush gray crinkle.

The case is excellent, and even the handle is marked ‘Underwood.’ I love the attention to detail on these older machines. Note the delicate line around the Underwood logo.

Underwoods are treasured by writers everywhere for good reason: they’re robust, stylish, timeless, and rarely will do you wrong.

Comes with our Working Guarantee, Lifetime Tradein Policy, and 1 Year Warranty (which you can always add to).
